COMMON FEATURES
  1. Processor:
    1. in all digital devices
      1. controls all functions of the device
        1. Specialist microprocessors for different devices.
          1. microprocessors: central processing unit (CPU) within a single chip
        2. Internal memory
          1. While microprocessor is working, it needs to store program instructions and data in internal memory.
            1. Different devices have different amounts of internal memory (bytes)
            2. Digital devices are storage devices.
              1. In addition to internal memory, there are components that can store data.
                1. E.g. computers contain high capacity hard disk drives to store terabytes of data.
                  1. hard drive: -main storage -Software and data stored on computer's hard drive -Bigger the hard drive size, more data can be stored -Currently measured in gigabytes
                2. Flash memory
                  1. type of peripheral that is ideal for portable digital devices
                    1. peripheral: external devices connected to a computer e.g. printer, microphone
                    2. doesn't lose data when turned off
                      1. no moving parts so cannot be easily damaged (solid state)
                        1. removable and can be used to transfer data between devices.
                          1. Micro SD cards-for smaller devices
                            1. SDXC (Extended Capacity) Card- stores up to 2TB
                              1. USB flash drive - plugs into USB port -stores up to 256GB
                                1. SDHC (High Capacity) card- stores up to 32 GB
                                  1. Secure Digital (SD) card -stores up to 4 GB
                                  2. WORKED EXAMPLE Mitch could use a DVD or CD drive to back up his video files. a) State one reason why DVD is more suitable. b) Identify one local storage device, other than a DVD or CD drive, that could be used for backups.
