Annotations:

  • Renaissance is a term referring to the rebirth of interest to the ancient Roman and classical ideas. Many aspects of life were changed during this period, including the thriving of Humanism, the development of Science and Technology, and the new techniques applied to Arts.
  1. Rebirth of Classical Ideas

    Annotations:

    • This is the central idea of Renaissance. The rebirth of classical ideas led people start to look into the art form and architecture design back then and learn from that specific period. I put Rebirth of classical Ideas here because it is the definition of Renaissance. People use ideas from the Ancient Greek and Rome, they develop the ideas and improve the ideas.
    1. Ancient Greek and Rome

      Annotations:

      • The origin of Renaissance is Ancient Greek and Roman idea. 
      1. Florence, Italy

        Annotations:

        • Florence, Italy was the center of Renaissance and also a large trading center all around Europe. Due to its location and trading, all the ideas and money were brought to the city which helped developing Renaissance then spread around Europe. 
        1. Medici Family

          Annotations:

          • Medici family is a powerful, wealthy family which is the ruling family for Florence. 
          1. Politics

            Annotations:

            • The Medici family controls the Politics of Florence. In many city-states, wealthy families have control of the Politics in the local area. City-States policy contributes to the reason why Renaissance cities bloomed.
          2. Patrons

            Annotations:

            • Patrons provide money to Artists, writers to draw and create writing that would be an important part of Renaissance. The Medici family is one of the famous Patron for Michelangelo and other famous artists. 
        2. Arts

          Annotations:

          • Art in Renaissance is different from the previous period. Some of the Renaissance art are non-religious and contained different perspectives, and the characters in the painting are full with facial expressions. Art has took an important role in Renaissance, so I link it with Renaissance. Under the category, there are Painters, Writers, and Sculptors. These are the main three types of contributor in Renaissance Art.
          1. Painter

            Annotations:

            • Painters at this time period used many new skills and created different paintings. Most of these painter were sponsored by their patrons to do their great work.
            1. Leonardo Da Vinci

              Annotations:

              • Leonardo Da Vinci was not just a famous painter, he was also a sculptor, engineer, architect, and inventor. His painting of Mona Lisa and advanced inventing ideas were the achievements that he was famous for.  
              1. Raphael

                Annotations:

                • Raphael was considered one of the three representation of the Renaissance Art. Madonna and child is one of his famous art work, which extrapolated on Leonardo Da Vinci's work. 
              2. Writer

                Annotations:

                • Writers at this period created many books that we still read now, including Dante's writing and Cervantes' Don Quixito.
                1. Shakespeare

                  Annotations:

                  • Shakespeare was one of the greatest writer and poet. Some of his famous work including: Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet and Macbeth. 
                2. Sculptor

                  Annotations:

                  • Sculptor at this time started to create life size sculptures that are not 2D but 3D and with many lifelike movements and variable facial expressions.
                  1. Donatello

                    Annotations:

                    • Donatello was the first sculptor that use freer-style to create sculpture. One of his famous sculpture is the Statue of David. This influenced a lot of artists during the Renaissance including Michelangelo. 
                    1. Michelangelo

                      Annotations:

                      • Michelangelo was a famous sculptor during the Renaissance. His work includes David which is originally inspired by Donatello, also La Pieta. These great works affected many other artists at that time and inspired them to do other great art.
                    2. Non religious themes

                      Annotations:

                      • Non-religious themes are a characteristic in the art work of Renaissance. Many painting were surrounded by the topic of realism. For example the art work of David, it is full of human expressions. Different from what the artists used to create, Renaissance arts focus more on people's daily life.  Non religious themes has become a important characteristic of Renaissance Arts. Painters, Writers, Sculptors no longer create art based on religious ideas, they started to create art based on the topic of Realism. 
                      1. Perspective

                        Annotations:

                        • Perspective was one of the characteristic which contain in the Renaissance Art work. Perspectives reinforce the sense of a reduction of the projected size of the object with the distance. When an object is far away from the perspective dot, then the object's size will decrease. When an object is close by the perspective dot, then the object's size will increase. 
                    3. Humanism

                      Annotations:

                      • Humanism is an philosophical idea started during the Renaissance which encourages people to have independent thinking and to look more into the individuals rather than the societies. I put humanism as a tag to Renaissance because many ideas in Renaissance come from Humanism. The idea to think independently and everyone could achieve greatnesses in their lives. Those are important ideas that led many people to success. 
                      1. Independent thinking

                        Annotations:

                        • The independent thinking for humanism is "All people have the ability to control their own lives and achieve greatness". This led the people questioning about the church and the ruling king. 
                        1. Power of the Church and the king Challenge

                          Annotations:

                          • The idea of Independent thinking began to spread around Europe thanks to the printing technique that was improved by Gutenberg. People started to question about the power of the church and the king's challenge. Humanism believe that every individual has their own capability to achieve greatness in their life. The idea was very different from the church so the humanist began to question about the power of the church and the king.
                          1. Change

                            Annotations:

                            • Because of the discovering of Humanism, people started to change through the idea that each individual has their own ability to achieve greatness in their life. This then changed the atmosphere in the society. 
                          2. Machiavelli

                            Annotations:

                            • Machiavelli was known as a famous Philosopher and politician during the Renaissance. The book he wrote that influence the Renaissance was "The Prince" which is about every man could determine their own destiny or fate challenge the power of the monarchal rule. Thi

                              Annotations:

                              • Petrarch is the founder of Humanism. He created a large collection of ancient latin and greek writings which scholar all over Europe come over and learn about these ideas. =
                            2. Science

                              Annotations:

                              • Science changed a lot due to many Renaissance figures' dedicated research and analysis which later on affected the years to come and changed many people's lives. I chose to put science as a tag to Renaissance because its a subject that most of the people study. Many revolutionary discoveries and inventions are all in this category. 
                              1. Technology

                                Annotations:

                                • Technology had improved a lot during this time period due to the many great thinkers at that time and their innovative ideas.
                                1. Gutenberg

                                  Annotations:

                                  • Gutenberg invented the moveable  type which changed the printing method in Renaissance. This contributed to the printing speed, so more books were available for the people to read. Thus, helped to spread the ideas of Humanism  
                                  1. Famous Printing Bible

                                    Annotations:

                                    • During the Renaissance, the church still hold most of the power in Europe. After the printing technique was improved by Gutenberg, his first printed Bible become a famous achievement that affected the later printing method and the spread of new ideas.

                                      Annotations:

                                      • The printing technique was originally come from the Chinese, but Gutenberg made it better. He changed the original wood type into metal type to make it more durable for the people to use.The technique contributed a lot during the Renaissance, it speed up the process of publishing and copying a book. During the pervious period, books are usually hand written and were very expensive because average book published to the church is about 3 month. The improvement of printing technique helped to spread the ideas in Renaissance. 
                                    2. Telescope

                                      Annotations:

                                      • Telescope was another invention that is important to the study of Astronomy, which is the stars. Telescope was invented by Copernicus. He invented telescope because he wanted to find evidence that would support his idea that Sun is the center of the Solar System. This invention was later on improved by Galileo.
                                      1. Architecture

                                        Annotations:

                                        • The architecture of this time period is greatly affected by the classical Roman and Greek ideas. But also many outstanding architects in this time period invented many new techniques that made the architectures at that time magnificent and amazing for the later generation to be admired at. 
                                        1. Brunelleschi

                                          Annotations:

                                          • One of the most important figures for Renaissance was created by Brunelleschi. He invented new techniques to build the roof structures of many beautiful cathedrals, including the Florence Cathedral. The building technique that is used in building the Cathedra was Dome. The new techniques was developed by Brunelleschi. 
                                      2. Andreas Vesalius

                                        Annotations:

                                        • Andreas Vesalius was one of the greatest scientist that studied anatomy which corrected many false ideas from the Greek physician Galen. Many physician studied Vesalius's work which helped their understanding for medicine. 
                                        1. Medicine

                                          Annotations:

                                          • The discovery of Medicine was originally found by William Harvey. He was mainly the contributor of medicine. Harvey was an english physician who was the first to describe accurately how blood is pumped through the heart. Also, through Vesalius' study of anatomy, physicians then had a better understanding of how to use medicine.
                                        2. Galileo

                                          Annotations:

                                          • Galileo was a famous astronomer, mathematics, and engineer, who laid the foundation for the modern physics and astronomy. He constructed a telescope and supported the Copernican's theory, which supports Sun is the center of the solar system. 
                                          1. Copernicus

                                            Annotations:

                                            • He was a Polish scientist that came up with an idea that Sun is the center of the universe and Earth is orbiting around the Sun. But because the church disagreed to accept the truth, then he got punished and killed through buring by a fire. 
                                            1. Leonardo Da Vinci

                                              Annotations:

                                              • Leonardo Da Vinci was one of the representative of Renaissance man. His contribution on technology and ideas about different war weapons, flying machines, work tools, water machine affect almost 100 years in Europe. He is also a talented artist and an expert in many different aspects.
