    1. Father + son relationships: Davie is blunt in the way he speaks to Alec - there is no attempt to comfort/ soften the blow of his mother's death.

      1. Music: Choice of instument has connotations of the blues tradition, which reflects atmosphere of grief to show it is a depressing scene.

        1. Father+son relationships: Davie turns to drink to escape from his problems. however this negatively impacts his relationship with Alec as Alec is increasingly becoming more disappointed in him.

                          1. The yacht is a symbol of Alec and Davies relationship. Both are willing to accept relationship is the way it is ad they are both willing to move on, and so they burn the yacht.

                            1. Father + son relationships: Davie is upset because of the lack of communication between him and Alec
                            2. "As long as ye keep moving it doesnae hit ye"
                              1. Greif: Davie tries to divert his feelings of greif into keeping busy. However because of this he never really gets over the death of his wife because he hasn't had time to deal with it.
                              2. "Naebody knows unless they've been through it"
                                1. Grief+loss: Davie admits to Billie that he is struggling with his grief. This highlights the isolating nature of grief for Alec and Davie.
                                2. D: "Ah'm gonnae fix it up when ah've got the time." A: "Ye've been saying that for weeks"
                                  1. Grief+loss/Father+son relationships: Davies sense of self motivation has been affected by his grief, demonstrated by his failure to work on Alec's yacht. this negatively impacts on his relationship with his son as he has continued to let him down.
