Resource summary

Photosynthesis
  1. What is produced and how
    1. Photosynthesis is the process that produces 'food' in plants
      1. Food produced is glucose
      2. Photosynthesis happens in the leaves of all green plants
        1. Photosynthesis happens inside the chloroplast
          1. This is found in the leaf cells and in other green parts of a plant
          2. Chloroplasts contain a substance called chlorophyll which absorbs sunlight
            1. The energy is used to convert C02 and water into O2 and glucose
              1. 6C02 + H20 -- C6H1206 + 602
                1. This is the chemical equation
                  1. Carbon dioxide + Water -- Glucose + Oxygen
                    1. This is the word equation
              2. Four things needed for photosynthesis
                1. Light
                  1. Sunlight beaming down on the leaf provides the energy for the reaction
                  2. Chlorophyll
                    1. This is the green substance found in chloroplasts that make leaves look green
                      1. Chlorophyll absorbs the energy in sunlight and uses it to combine C02 an water to make glucose and oxygen
                      2. Carbon Dioxide
                        1. Carbon dioxide diffuses into the leaf from the air
                        2. Water
                          1. Water is drawn up into the plant from the soil up the roots and stem, then into the leaf via its veins
                        3. 6 Uses of glucose
                          1. Stored as starch
                            1. Glucose is turned into starch and stored in roots, stems and leaves ready for use when photosynthesis isn't happening
                            2. Stored in seeds
                              1. Glucose is turned into lipids for storing in seeds
                              2. Making proteins
                                1. Glucose is combined with nitrates to make amino acids which are then made into proteins
                                2. Respiration
                                  1. Respiration releases the energy that enables [plants to convert the rest of the glucose into various other useful substances which they use to build new cells and grow
                                  2. Making fruits
                                    1. Glucose along with another sugar called fructose, is turned into sucrose for storing in fruits
                                    2. Making cell walls
                                      1. Glucose is converted into cellulose for making cell walls
                                        1. To support and strengthen the cells
