M. NEHRU

JOHN MORLEY
Secretary of State for India - Reforms of 1909 (seen as attempt to divide and rule?)
BOSE
Commanded the INA who attempted to defeat the British in WW2. Killed in a plane crash in 1942.
IRWIN
Viceroy 1926-31
Well liked and conciliatory viceroy.
Arranged the Roundtable Conferences. 1931 made pact with Gandhi.
ANNIE BESANT
British woman - leader of Home Rule league in WW1 and leader of Congress in 1917.

Led moderates within Congress and dominated after the Partition of Bengal.

Carried out Amritsar Massacre in 1919. Introduced Crawling Order.

Viceroy 1947
Introduced Plan Balkan. Biased towards Congress - close friend of Nehru's.
WAVELL
Viceroy 1943-7
Viceroy during the Bengal famine - known as a 'man for solutions'
LINLITHGOW
Viceroy 1936-43
CHURCHILL
Believed India was the 'jewel in the crown'. Prime Minister 1940-45 - sent the Cripps Mission.
ATTLEE
Labour politician with strong Congress bias. Replaced Wavell with Mountbatten - was Prime Minister 1945-51.
SIR CYRIL RADCLIFFE
British Lawyer who drew the line that partitioned India.
EDWIN MONTAGUE
Introduced reforms in 1919 (Gov. of India Act) that created dyarchy. Made a declaration in 1917 that committed Britain to giving India home rule.
QUEEN VICTORIA
First Briton to control India. Made Royal Proclamation in 1858 and was Empress of India.
SARDAR PATEL
Took position of Home Affairs minister in Interim Government.
J NEHRU
Member of the 'Young Hooligans' who wanted purna swaraj. Became first prime minister of India.
PETHICK-LAWRENCE
Part of the Cabinet mission (secretary of state of India at the time).
MUHAMMAD ALI KHAN
Represented Muslim League on Council in Interim Government. Pushed for British to leave quicker than they wanted to.
CRIPPS
Sent to India on Cripps Mission and Cabinet Mission. Showed bias to Congress in Cabinet Mission.
ROOSEVELT
Keen to give India independence - didn't believe in empires. Put pressure on Churchill to get Britain out of India (Atlantic Charter 1941).
