Tissues
  1. Intercellular Junction connect cells
    1. Tight Junction closes space between cells by fusing cell membranes
      1. Cells line the small intestine
      2. Desmosomes bind cells by forming "Spot Welds" between cell membranes
        1. Cells of the outer skin layer
        2. Gap Junctions form tubular channels between cells that allow the exchange of substances
          1. Muscle cells of the heart and digestive system
        3. 4 Major Types of Human Tissue
          1. Epithelial
            1. Function
              1. protection, secretion, absorption and excretion
              2. Location
                1. covers body surface, covers and lines internal organs, compose glands
                2. Charecteristics
                  1. lack blood vessels, cells readily divide, cells are tightly packed together.
                3. Connective
                  1. Function
                    1. bind, support, protect, fill spaces, store fat, produce blood cells
                    2. Location
                      1. widely distributed throughout the body
                      2. Charecteristics
                        1. Mostly have a good blood supply, cells are farther apart than epithelial cells, extracellular matrix in between
                      3. Muscle
                        1. Function
                          1. Movement
                          2. Location
                            1. attached to bones, in the walls of hollow internal organs, heart
                            2. Charecteristics
                              1. Able to contract in response to specific stimuli
                            3. Nervous
                              1. Function
                                1. conduct impulses for coordination, regulation, intergration and sensory reception
                                2. Location
                                  1. brain, spinal cord, nerves
                                  2. Charecteristics
                                    1. cells communicate with each other and other body parts
                                3. Connective
                                  1. Connective tissue connect, supports, protects, provides frameworks, fills spaces, stores fat, produces blood cells, protects against infection, and helps repair damaged tissues.
                                    1. Connective tissue cells usually have considerable extracellular matrix between them.
                                      1. This extracellular matrix consists of fibers and a ground substance (gel-like material).
