Rules for assigning oxidation numbers
The oxidation number for an element in its elemental form is 0
The oxidation number of a monatomic ion is equal to the charge on the ion
The sum of all the oxidation numbers in a compound is 0
For polyatomic ions the sum of all the oxidation numbers must be equal to the charge on the ion
Oxygen has an oxidation number of -2 except when bonded to fluorine when its +2 and in peroxides when is is -1
Hydrogen has an oxidation number of +1 except when bonded to metals in hydrides when it is -1
