Moles and Solutions
  1. Concentration
    1. In a solution, the solute is what dissolves in the solvent, which could be salt in water.
      1. Concentrations are measured in moles per cubic decimetre
        1. The concentration of a solution tells you how much solute is dissolved in a given amount of solvent.
          1. If you know the concentration in mol dm-3, you can find the amount, in mol, in any volume of a solution. If the volume of the solution is measured in dm-3 then: N = C x V
            1. N - amount of substance (mol) C - concentration of solute (mol dm-3) V - volume of solution (dm-3)
          2. Solutions
            1. Moles = Concentration x Volume
              1. Solvent - Salt
                1. Solute - Water
                  1. Made up of two or more substances. Homogeneous mixture.
                    1. Has a uniform composition meaning that the substances cannot be distinguihsed
                    2. Moles
                      1. A mole in chemistry is simply and unit of measurement. Chemical reactions sometimes produce results which would not make sense in grams or absolute numbers. We don't want to be working with 50 digit numbers!
                        1. A mole is the quantity of anything that has the same number of particles found in 12.000 grams of carbon-12
                          1. Avogadro's number: 6.02x10^23
                            1. Moles are used because they are consistent it relates to a constant comparison. This means that we can convert easily to atoms/molecules and grams
                              1. Mass = Moles x Relative Formula Mass
