How the heart is adapted to its function
Valves ensure that blood can only flow in one direction through the heart
The walls of the atria are thin.
They can be stretched to receive blood as it returns to the heart
They can contract with enough force to push blood through the atrioventricular valves
The walls of the heart are made up of cardiac muscle
The cardiac muscle has its own blood supply

This can change through exercise
The medulla controls the changes in heart rate
The Right ventricle only pumps to the lungs
The left pumps blood to the rest of the body which requires much more pressure.
