Effectiveness
1. Robinson et al 1990 meta analysis found CBT superior to no treatment control groups
  1. Found CBT to be less effective than a placebo at reducing depressive symptoms
2. Kuyken and Tsivrikos 2009 concluded over 15% of the variance in the outcome of CBT may be down to therapist competence
Appropriateness
1. Successfully applied to many different client groups; elderly, juveniles, adolescents
2. Selmi et al 1990 found computer administered CBT is as effective as other forms of psychotherapy treatment
  1. Computer based and phone based psychotherapy have relatively low level of drop out compared to face to face CBT
3. Elkin et al 1985 CBT appears to be less suitable to people with high levels of dysfunctional beliefs (rigid and resistant to change)
4. Simons et al 1995 CBT is less suitable in situations where high levels of stress reflect realistic stressors in the person's life that therapy cannot resolve
