Mathematical models in probability and statistics
A mathematical model is a simplification of a real world situation.
Advantages: quick and easy to produce, can simplify a complex situation, they enable predictions to be made about the future, help provide control
Disadvantages: only give a partial description of real situation, only work for restricted range of values.

a variable can take any value in a given range
a variable that can take only specific values in a given range is a discrete
a grouped frequency distribution consists of classes and their related class frequencies
the mode or modal class is the value or class that occurs most often
