  1. As you go down the metals become more reactive
    1. the outer electron is more easily lost as it is further from the nucleus
      1. They have lower melting and boiling points
      2. Lithium, Sodium, Potassium, Rubidium and Caesium
        1. all have one outer electron
          1. form ionic compounds with non-metals
            1. Keen to loose their outer electron and become 1+
              1. produce white compounds that dissolve in water to form colourless solutions
              2. React with water to produce hydrogen gas
                1. They float and move around the surface, fizzing vigorously
                  1. They form hydroxides that dissolve in water to give alkaline solutions
                    1. 2Na + 2H20
