  1. The government would give 160 acres of free land provided you live and farm on it for 5 years, could have brought the land after 6 months if wanted.
    1. Timber Culture Act (1873)
      1. Offered 160 extra acres free if you planted trees on 40 acres, later reduced to 10 acres.
      2. Problems with the Homestead Act
        1. Not enough land to make a profit.
          1. Land speculators asked employee's to acquire land, often reselling at higher prices.
            1. Some land was less fertile.
