Refraction is the bending of light as it passes from one medium into another.
It occurs because the speed of light changes.
Light travels faster in air than in glass or water.
When light travels from a less dense medium into a more dense one it is bent towards the normal, and vice versa.
Light is not refracted if it enters the new medium at 90 degrees to the surface, i.e. if it is travelling along a normal.
A swimming pool looks shallower than it really is because of refraction.
A pencil in a beaker of water looks bent because of refraction.
