  1. 1. Intrapsychic Phase
    1. Re-evaluation of alternatives to the relationship
      1. Social withdrawal 'rumination'
        1. Resentment, brooding on partner's faults and relational costs
          1. Threshold: 'I can't stand this anymore'
            1. Nothing is said to the partner although dissatisfaction may be expressed in other ways (e.g. diary entry)
              1. This is an individual process
              2. 2. Dyadic Phase
                1. Uncertainty, anxiety, hostility, complaints, discussion of issues
                  1. Talk about 'our relationship', equity, roles etc
                    1. Resentment of goals, possibilities
                      1. Threshold: 'I mean it'
                        1. People confront their partner & begin to discuss their feelings & the future
                          1. At this stage the relationship might be saved, or partners begin to involve others with their dissatisfaction with the relationship
                          2. 3. Social Phase
                            1. Going public, support seeking, denigration of partner
                              1. Alliance building
                                1. Social commitment, outside forces create cohesion
                                  1. Threshold: 'This is now inevitable'
                                    1. Spills over to the network of friend & family
                                      1. Others may take sides, offer advice & support or may helping in mending any disputes
                                        1. This involvement may even speed up the partners towards dissolution
                                        2. 4. Grave Dressing Phase
                                          1. Tidying up memories, making relational histories (e.g. deciding how you feel)
                                            1. Stories prepared for different audiences
                                              1. Threshold: 'Time to get a new life'
                                                1. Partners strive to construct a representation of the failed relationship that doesn't paint their contributions to it in an unfavourable light
                                                  1. People may strategically reinterpret their view of the partner
                                                  2. 5. Resurrection Phase
                                                    1. Recreating sense of own social value
                                                      1. Defining what to get out of future relationships
                                                        1. Preparation for future relationships
                                                          1. Each partner prepares themselves for new relationships by redefining themselves & building on past mistakes & experiences
