Light and Space - For Summer Yr 8 Exams
  1. Light travels at 300,000 Kilometers
    1. The sun is 150 million km away
      1. Takes 500 seconds or 8 minutes to get to Earth
      2. Light travels in straight lines
        1. Nothing can go faster than light
          1. Transparent
            1. Light passes through E.G Glass
              1. Transmits the light through
                  1. We see objects because they reflect light from a light source into our eyes
                    1. Opaque
                      1. Light cannot go through it E.G Wood
                        1. Absorbs the light
                          1. Some Reflect the light E.G Mirrors
                            1. When you look into a mirror you see an almost perfect reflection
                              1. This is called seeing an image of yourself
                          2. Translucent
                            1. Lets a bit of light through but you cant so a clear image through it
                              1. E.G Thin Plastics and tracing paper
                              2. Scatters the light so when you look through it you can only see some of the light going through - Thus the 'clouded' image through it
                              3. Space
                                1. Sources of light
                                  1. Stars (Mainly the Sun for us)
                                    1. Objects that produce their own light are called luminous
                                      1. Fires
                                        1. Light bulbs
                                          1. Bio-luminescent algae
                                            1. Combustion
                                              1. As planets and star are so far away we use telescopes to see them
                                                1. Telescopes have lenses that are magnified, so when you look through its magnifiedso you can see stuff that are far away
                                                2. The Seasons
                                                    1. As the Earth axis
                                                      1. The moon does not produce light, it reflects the sun light at Earth
                                                        1. The moon has phases as the moon orbits around the Earth and blocks the light at different points so we only see certain parts of the moon that have light
