Nuclear Fission and Fusion
  1. Nuclear Fission
    1. This is the process of splitting a nucleus
      1. Uranium or plutonium isotopes are normally used as the fuel in nuclear reactors. Their atoms have relatively large nuclei that are easy to split, especially when hit by neutrons.
        1. When a uranium-235 or plutonium-239 nucleus is hit by a neutron:
          1. The nucleus splits into two smaller nuclei – daughter nuclei, which are radioactive
            1. Two or three more neutrons are released
              1. Some energy is released
