Respiration
  1. Aerobic respiration
    1. Oxygen + glucose --> carbon dioxide + water (+energy)
      1. Requires oxygen
        1. Is the release of energy in cells by the breakdown of food substances in the presence of oxygen
          1. Happens in both animals and plants
            1. Produces energy in the form of ATP
            2. Why do we respire?
              1. We respire to get energy. We need energy for:
                1. Cell divsion
                  1. Growth
                    1. Muscle contraction
                      1. Active transport
                        1. Protein synthesis
                          1. Nerve impulses
                        2. Anaerobic respiration
                          1. glucose --> lactic acid
                            1. Far less efficient that aerobic respiration
                              1. Happens duing hard exercise or whenever there is no oxygen
                                1. The build up of lactic acid causes oxygen debt. We keep breathing heavily after exercise to get out of oxygen debt
                                  1. Less ATP is produced
                                    1. Lactic acid is harmful to the body so it has to be removed from cells. This happens once aerobic respiration begins
