Mahr (dowry)
- Mahr is the dowry paid to the wife from the
husband - It is not a large sun but carefully
negotiated. - She keeps it if they later divorce
- It consists of a meal and takes place within 3 days of the
couple living together - Money is given as presents - Huge
parties are traditional in SOME societies but it has nothing to
do with ISLAM - Muhammad disapproved of showing off,
especially when it caused difficulty for the bride or groom &
their families.
Walimah
Nikah (wedding)
- It is a simple affair - Vows are
exchanged, declaration that they are
marrying at their own free will.
- Readings from the Qur’an and prayers
are said - NO religious official is needed
but the imam is present - The bride
doesn’t need to turn up as long as she
has 2 witnesses of her agreement and
her wali (marriage reps) - It is a business
document
