Buoyancy/Archimedes'Principle

  1. Buoyancy

    • It is a force on an object, making that object rise or move upwards
    • derived from a spanish word "boyar" which means float
    • It is made by the difference in pressure put on the object by the fluid or air that the object is in.
    • The net upward buoyancy force is equal to the magnitude of the weight of fluid that is displaced by the body
    • This force enables the object to float by making it lighter in weight
    • It is very important for many vehicles like boats, ships, balloons and blimps
  2. Archimedes' Principle

    • It is formulated by Archimedes of Syracuse
      • Archimedes' was a Greek mathematician, physicist, engineer and an astronomer
    • The upward buoyant force that is exerted on a body immersed in a fluid, whether fully or partially submerged,is equal to the weight of the fluid that the body displaces and acts in the upward direction at the centre of mass of the displaced fluid
