Introduction Both poems portray a romantic theme which focuses on the end of the relationship, and the feelings that this loss of love produces Both are significantly affected by loss of their lover: When we two parted - this is depicted by Byron by the use of  the metaphor "a knell to mine ear". This suggests that his lovers name sounds like a bell that is rung slowly to mark a death, and so this hints that he grieves for their relationship as her name reminds him of the death of their relationship. Neutral Tones -  also depicts being hurt by love, he remembers the day his relationship broke down. Consequently he makes a pessimistic generalisation that "love deceives", and so for Hardy he didn't just loose one relationship, he also lost his faith in love.
