Fold Mountains

Formation

- River deposits sediment on the sea bed, this eventually builds up and the sediment begins to compress.- As the sediment continues to compress it forms sedimentary rock.- The two plates are moving towards each other while this occurs due to convection currents.- As they get close it forces the rock to buckle upwards forming jagged mountains.- In places the rock may crack and allow magma through, forming volcanoes.

Uses

- Skiing/Other tourist activities- Farming- Mining- Hydro Electric PowerAndesFarmingUse of terraces to grow crops as the flat land is able to retain water. Most crops are grown in the lower valleys.Cash crops such as soy beans, rice and cotton are produced.Potatoes is the main staple crop that is grown.Llamas are used for carrying materials and building in inaccessible areas. Some animals are used for meat, milk and wool.MiningMore than half of Peru's exports are from mining. The Andes are rich in coal, iron, gold, nickel and silver. The Yanacocha Gold Mine is the largest in the world. The methods used to mine can contaminate water supplies however, the mining industry created many jobs for locals.Hydroelectric PowerSteep, narrow, deep valleys are frequent in the Andes and make it cheaper to create dams, the steep valleys are useful as it allows the water to gain velocity and form electricity.Melting snow increases the water supply but in winter this can limit the amount of power created.TourismEco-tourism activities.Inca Trail and Machu Piccu.Other ancient remains.Skiing/Snowboarding.
