Noun Declensions Lesson 1 Nouns are in the First Declension of Nouns. A Declension is the many forms of a noun which indicate its Case, Number, Gender, and Use. First Declension Nouns follow the same endings. The ending of a noun identifies its Case, Number,    Gender, and Use in a sentence. First Declension nouns are grouped in the category of Feminine nouns, according to their endings. Almost all of First Declension nouns are feminine in gender. Galba, agricola, and nautica are Masculine nouns, even though they have Feminine noun endings. Noun endings are added to a base word as follows: Galba = Galb + a      agricola = agricol + a     nautica = naut + a Galba, agricola, and nautica end in the letter -a and fall under the Nominative Case of Nouns. Case and Use of Nouns Galba is in the Nominative Case. It is used as the Subject of a sentence. The Subject tells who or what the sentence is about: Galba.                  Galba est agricola. Galba is a farmer. Agricola is in the Nominative Case. It is used as the Predicate Nominative of a sentence. The Predicate Nominative is a word that follows a linking verb and renames the Subject of the sentence.                  Galba est agricola.     Galba is a farmer.                  Galba is renamed as what? a farmer. Nauta is in the Nominative Case. It is used as the Subject of a sentence. It tells who or what the sentence is about: the sailor. Nauta pugnat. The sailor fights.
