Election of 1800 Who - John Adams (Federalist) and Thomas Jefferson (Democratic Republican) What - Presidential election of 1800 between John Adams, a Federalist, and Thomas Jefferson, a Democratic Republican. When - 1800 What happened before - The Sedition act, enacted by Federalists, prohibited the publication of insults or malicious attacks on the president or members of Congress. The Act led Jefferson and James Madison to form the Kentucky and Virginia resolutions that declared the Sedition Act had no force. Conflict over the Sedition Act set the stage for the presidential election of 1800. Short-term impact - Jefferson won the election by controlling the South and the West. After 1800, the Federalist part became a minority party (it was only strong in New England. and the Democratic-Republican party became a majority party. 2. Thomas Jefferson Who - Thomas Jefferson What - Jefferson was a Democratic Republican from Virginia. He won the presidency in the election of 1800 against John Adams. He emerged as a strong president with a strong party to back him. His ideal America was an agrarian republic of yeoman farmers. America's abundant land allowed Jefferson to envision a nation of small family farms. He believed in the "common man." He believed that power in concentrated in the hands of an elite few was dangerous; and, that power should rest with the people so that all interests were represented. He wanted to give more power to state legislature and limit the powers of the federal government. He also wanted the Constitution to be interpreted strictly. Jefferson disliked how the Constitution didn't place a limit on the number of years a president could serve or how it didn't have a bill of rights to protect the citizens' rights.
