These two paragraph are used by Alagiah to connote the breakdown of Somali society and the descent into barbarity that has taken place during the civil war. The subjects of the two paragraphs are the most vulnerable in any society; the old and the young. The measure of a civilized, stable and functioning society is one that cares for the most vulnerable. Here the most vulnerable are the ones that suffer the worst and are left to die, un-regarded.The emotive impact of these two paragraphs is complex as we feel pity and revulsion in equal measure. This is deliberate and is achieved through Alagiah's language choices. He wants us to share his emotions and emotional journey.
