Lesson 1 - Standing Waves
Textbook References: Hamper IB HL Physics pp 179 - 181; Oxford Text pp 158 - 163. Syllabus Outcomes Covered in This Lesson: Understandings: The nature of standing waves Boundary conditions Nodes and antinodes Applications and Skills: Describing the nature and formation of standing waves in terms of superposition Distinguishing between standing and travelling waves Activities: Task #1. Watch this Standing Waves Part I: Demonstration (4.5 mins) and the corresponding video which explains the physics behind this wave phenomenon - Standing Waves Part II: Explanation (5.5 mins) Write down in your notebook some simple ideas about how "standing waves" in general and how the different "harmonics" are formed. (Diagrams would be useful in keeping the information brief and clear for the reader. (5 mins) Task #2. Complete this task by downloading and following this Students Directions Worksheet using the Phet Fourier: Making Waves simulation. Record some of the "big ideas" in your notebook. (20 mins) Task #3: Watch this video on Boundary Conditions and Standing Waves (10 mins) Plenary: Download and record the answers to the questions in your notebook for this Topic 4.5 Lesson 1 Plenary powerpoint.
