The scientific method is a clearly defined protocol to follow when carrying out a scientific study at any level or discipline. The first step of the scientific method is to make observations based on verifiable events which can be witnessed by others and therefore proven.

The observations made must be objective rather than subjective, meaning that they can't be biased by personal opinions or preferences. For example "the cat was yellow" is an objective statement but "the cat was a nice colour" is a subjective statement.

The goal is to make an observation which is clearly seen as either true or false, and can be proven so by experiment. These observations are made through sensory perception from previous experiments and will form the basis of your scientific study.
