The theory of opposites was the new version of the theory of the four humours. It was changed by Galen. The new theory stated that there was the same four humours, but instead of being given more of the humour that was causing the person to be ill. The opposite humour was given. So if someone had a cold, then they were prescribed a hot bath and pepper. This theory was closer to what we know today about illness but
