Aims To remove subgingival plaque, calculus and other plaque retention factors. To decontaminate the top 10-20% of the root cementum, thereby eliminating endotoxin. To produce a hard, smooth root surface that is biologically acceptable and therefore allows epithelial attachment and the formation of a long junctional epithelium. To enable a certain degree of shrinkage. thereby directly reducing pocket depth and facilitating easier patient cleansing. To facilitate resolution of gingival inflammation.
