Halogens = salt formers

Group 7 - halogensHalogens = salt formers

            xx            xx     x             x     x     F                             xx

           xx           xx           xxx   x            x  x     x    CL    x  x                    xx           xx

All have 7 electrons in outer shell All want to gain 1 electron

                  +1e-                                                                  =1e-Fluorine F ------> Fluoride F-                       Chlorine Cl ------> Chloride CL-

Reactivity of the halogens decreases down the group because;- -More inner shells (shielding)-Distance from nucleus to outer shell is greater-Less attraction to gain the electron.
