This is part one of the 2 part series on Russia 1894-1945. This course focuses on the period of 1894 to 1917 and charts the fall of the Tsar. In this course we look at the conditions under tsarist rule, the long term causes of the Russian Revolution and the abdication and fall from grace.
We begin our Course with a high level look at the beginning of the reign of Tsar Nicholas II, the industrial challenges that he faced and what like was like for the vast majority of people in the Russian Empire at the time of his reign.
Next we look deeper into the type of rule that exercised by the Tsar. By understanding the dynamics of the Autocratic style of leadership, we get a better feel for why resistance started to grow. We also examine the Tsar's political opponents of the time.
As discontentment grew amongst the Russian working classes, protests and violence began to occur. The Tsar tired to respond by making a number of reforms, including the establishment of the Duma, but the break from unrest was short lived.
Fortunes in the World War 1 caused further resentment towards the Tsar. As Russians were losing lives and conditions worsened, the influence of the Tsarina and Rasputin didn't help matters. Learn about the final days of the Romanovs in this module.
Let's take a step back now to examine some of the underlying causes of the abdication and Russian Revolution. Factors such as the industrialism, war and size were all factors which were exacerbated by the poor leadership of Tsar Nicholas at crucial times.
