Therapeutic Alliance 1. Triadic (patient, PWP, materials). 2. Good TA is best predictor of treatment outcomes (Martin et al., 2000). Strongest association in CBT (Bohart et al., 2002). 3. Average TA across several sessions shows stronger relationship (Crits-Christoph et al., 2011) 4. Poor TA can increase drop outs and non-compliance (Resi & Brown, 1999)
Non-Verbal CF Skills 1. Eye contact, facial expressions, posture and seating arrangements (Richards & Whyte, 2011). 2. 60-65% of communication is non-verbal (Burgoon et al., 2009). 3. Patients don't feel listened to if not demonstrated (Gilbert & Leahy, 2007).
Verbal CF Skills 1. Paraphrasing, reflection, empathy, summarising, realistic reassurance (Richards & Whyte, 2011). 2. Meta-analysis empathy more important in CBT (Bohart et al., 2000). 3. Summarising keeps session focused (Papworth et al., 2013).
CF Skills in PWP Working 1. Non-verbal behaviours increase perception of PWP expertness, and combination of verbal and non-verbal skills influenced treatment outcome (Schmidt & Strong, 1970)
Limitations 1. Evidence-base not specific to PWPs/CBT. 2. Evidence base mostly face-to-face.
