What is the difference between a compound and a mixture? | A compound is joined by a chemical bond whilst a mixture is not |
List some methods of separating. | • sieving • filtrating • distillation • evaporation • chromatography |
Define: a) miscible liquids b) immiscible liquids | a) liquids that do dissolve into each other- often separated using fractional distilling b) liquids that do not dissolve into each other- for example, oil and water |
What is fractional distilling? | • an effective way of separating miscible liquids using a fractional column. • this is possible because of the different boiling points of the liquids in the mixture |
What is the difference between simple and fractional distillation? | • simple distillation is used when the substances have a significant difference in boiling points • whereas if the boiling points of the two liquids in the mixture are close, fractional distillation is more efficient |
What is paper chromatography? | separates mixtures of substances dissolved in a solvent as they move up a piece of chromatography paper |
Why does chromatography work? | The different substances are separated because of their different solubilities in the solvent used. |
Where is chromatography used? | It is used in the food industry and forensic science. |
