Questão Responda
What is bioaccumulation? Heavy metals, present in industrial waste and pesticides, enter the food chain, accumulate in animal bodies and may reach a toxic level
What is eutrophication? 1. Untreated sewage and fertilisers may run into water and cause rapid growth of plants and algae. 2. These then die and are decomposed; the microbes, which break them down, increase in number and use up the dissolved oxygen in the water. 3. Animals which live in the water may suffocate
What is a disadvantage of plastic? Plastics are non-biodegradable and so there is an increase pressure on landfill
What is a habitat? A habitat is a place where an organism or a community of organisms live.
Why are habitats being destroyed? Destruction of habitat due to increased land use for building, quarrying, dumping and agriculture
Why is destroying habitats a problem? Causes loss of species and a reduction in biodiversity
What measures are in place to ensure sustainability? Reduce, reuse, recycle schemes or the use of biodegradable materials in packaging
Why is the disposal of waste in landfill sites a problem? Non-degradable products use productive land in landfill, and partial breakdown produces toxic materials that may leak into the environment.
What is the difference between living and non-living indicators? Living indicators will only grown in certain conditions and so you can tell the quality of water/air from the type of species living there e.g. lichens. Non-living indicators is the use of technology to test pH level and oxygen levels in streams.
How can biodiversity and endangered species be conserved? • Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species • Sites of Special Scientific Interest • captive breeding programmes • national parks • seed/ sperm banks
