Asbestos

The term asbestos is derived from a Greek word meaning "inextinguishable". A group of fibrous silicate minerals, the most common of which are: Chrysotile, Crocidolite and Amosite. Asbestos can still be found in buildings constructed up to the year 2000. |

Amosite is also known as brown asbestos.
Amosite was used for anti-condensation and acoustic purposes; on structural steel it was used for fire protection.
In the UK Amosite was also used widely in the manufacture of insulation boards. The import of Amosite was banned as of 1 January 1986 by The Asbestos (Prohibitions) Regulations 1985.

Crocidolite

Crocidolite is known as blue asbestos. The needle-like fibres are the strongest of all asbestos fibres and have a high resistance to acids. Crocidolite was used in sprayed insulation. Crocidolite is known to be the most lethal of all the asbestos types. |

Asbestosis is the scarring of the lungs
which leads to long-term breathing complications. The disease does not have a cure.
It is caused exclusively by exposure to asbestos, but may not be diagnosed until decades after the exposure occurred.

| Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 | The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 came into force on 6 April 2012 Updating previous Asbestos Regulations, in practice the changes are fairly limited. They mean that some types of non-licensed work with asbestos now have additional requirements, i.e. notification of work, medical surveillance and record keeping. All other requirements remain unchanged. |
