Why did the colonists reject the idea of being taxed? They were undergoing an economic recession; they didn't think it was just to be taxed unless they had representation in Parliament.
What laws did England pass that provoked fierce opposition? The Proclamation Act, The Sugar Act, and the Currency Act.
What is the Proclamation Act? It prohibited English settlement beyond the Appalachian Mountains to appease the Native Americans.
What is the Sugar Act? It imposed tax on foreign molasses, sugar, and other goods imported into the colonies.
What is the Currency Act? Prohibited colonial governments from issuing paper money.
What were the "Sons of Liberty"? Secret groups, that colonists formed, in response to the Stamp Act, where they staged riots against agents who collected the taxes and marked items with a special stamp.
What was the Townshend act and when was it passed? It was passed in 1767 and it placed taxes on lead, glass, paint, paper, and tea.
When was the Boston Massacre? 1770
What is guerilla warfare? Fighting from behind trees and other defenses.
What are the first ten amendments to the Constitution known as? The Bill of Rights
What are "factions"? (in Britain) Made up of few people who schemed to win favors from government, and were more interested in their own personal profits than the public good.
Who were two of Washington's Chief advisors? Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton.
Who wanted the federal government to be stronger than the state government? Alexander Hamilton
Who believed the state government should be stronger than the federal government? Thomas Jefferson

What was the Corps of Discovery? The exploration of the United States, by Captains Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. They were exploring to find out exactly what was bought.

What was the Kansas-Nebraska Act, and when was it passed? It was passed on May 25, 1854, and it nullified the provisions creating the territories of Kansas and Nebraska. It allowed the people of these two territories to decide for themselves whether or not to permit slavery there.
What was the Dred Scott decision? A court case, where abolitionists stated that since Scott had lived in a free state and free territory, that he was in actuality a free man. Supreme Court decided that residing in a free state and free territory did not make Scott a free man, because he was not a citizen of the United States. The Court then ruled that the old Missouri Compromise was now unconstitutional because Congress did not have the power to prohibit slavery in the Territories.

What is known as the first modern war? Civil War

What happened to slavery after the Civil War? By executive proclamation and constitutional amendment, slavery was officially ended.

What were the primary activities of the new western economy? Farming, mining, and ranching.
What was the Dawes Act of 1887? The law was intended to break up the Native American communities, and bring about assimilation into white culture, by deeding portions of the reservation lands to individual Native Americans who were expected to farm their land.
What dramatic changes took place after the Civil War? Machines replaced hand labor; extensive nationwide railroad services facilitated the wider distribution of goods; new products were made available in large quantities; large amounts of money from bankers and investors were available for the expansion of business operations.
How did the use of machines in industries change life? It enabled workers to produce a large quantity of goods, much faster than they could by hand. Business increased, so more workers were hired, creating more job opportunities.
What is "division of labor"? Workers were hired and assigned to perform specific jobs within the production process."Division of labor" increased the rate of production.
What happened when the rate of production was increased? Businesses lowered prices of their products, making them more affordable for people. Sales and businesses were increasingly successful and profitable.

Why did they call it Hooverville? President Hoover did not know how to help people who were living in make shift homes and tents, due to unemployment.

What were the first two major steps in The New Deal? 1. relieve suffering 2. stimulate the economy
What was the Glass-steagall Act? It was meant to provide economic stability and to prevent other crashes
What was the social security act of 1935? It established pensions for the ages and infirm as well as a system of unemployment insurance
When did the economy recover fully? Not until the United States entered World War 2
What was the Truman Doctrine? It offered military aid to countries in danger of communist upheaval.
When did the United Nations form and why? Formed in 1949, to replace the defunct League of Nations, and to ensure peace in the world.
Progressivism A political philosophy advocating or favoring gradual social, political, and economica reform through government action. Left of center.
What are the two most significant political changes? 1. Ratification of the 17th amendment, which required that all U.S. senators be chosen by popular election. 2. Ratification of the 19th amendment, which granted women the right to vote.
What was the first commercially successful steamboat, and led the pack as the fastest way to ship goods? Robert Fulton's dermont.
What happened to labor laws in the 1830's? Labor movement to improve working conditions ad increase wages. It did not completely catch on until after the Civil War.
