Elizabeth's Privy Council | Elizabeth surrounded herself with 19 trusted advisors, this group was known as the 'Privy Council'. The council met daily to discuss domestic and foreign issues: war, foreign ambassadorial relations, and the enforcement of the Religious Settlement. To avoid conflict, Elizabeth used a policy of 'divide and rule'. To 'divide and rule', Elizabeth allowed only 8/9 councilors to meet regularly, flattered to provoke jealousy and rewards. |
William Cecil |
Elizabeth appointed Cecil as the Secretary of State in 1558. In 1571, Cecil received the title 'Lord Burghley'. Personally, Cecil was a protestant. After his involvement in the execution of Mary, Queen of Scots in 1587 Elizabeth refused to see him.
