Gun-boat diplomacy July 1853, Commodore Perry arrived with 4 warships to repeat US requests for various commercial agreements and promising to return the following year to receive Japan's response.
Tokugawa Shogunate Agreed to the Treaty of Kanagawa in March 1854.
Treaty of Kanagawa Opened up two of Japan's ports to US trade and granted the US the position of most-favored-nation.
Turning point in Japan's history Due to the Treaty of Kanagawa, Japan's policy of seclusion was finally ended after 200 years; these lead to the rapid emergents of Japan as an important regional and international power.
Treaty of Amity and Commerce Signed in 1854, where Japan's government granted extra-territorial rights to the citizens of the US. This was one of the unequal treaties that led to nationalist resentment. Japan was gradually pressured into signing similar treaties with Britain, France and Russia.
Imperial Court Dominated by nationalists who favored continuing seclusion and advocated repelling the barbarians. They opposed to the signing of the Treaty of Amity and Commerce, nevertheless they failed.
