Questão Responda
What is infrared spectroscopy primarily used for the identification of? Functional groups.
What is the mechanism by which infrared spectroscopy works? Infrared wavelengths of light are shone at samples from a heated ceramic rod. These wavelengths are absorbed in different amounts by bonds in molecules as the types of bonds and the molecules that they're in bend and stretch to different vibrational quanta. The difference in energy from the reference beam, as the bonds in the molecules absorb energy to stretch, is characteristic of that bond/functional group in that particular molecule. This produces peaks in the reading. Lack of peaks is also important.
Which two states of matter can samples for infrared spectroscopy be in? Liquid and solid.
What is a limitation of infrared spectroscopy and what it can tell you? It cannot tell you the position of a bond in a molecule, only that the bond is present.
