Why do atoms bond? This is due to the Octet Rule, which states that atoms want to have 8 electrons in their outermost energy level, because they want to be more stable. This can be done by gaining or losing electrons, Ionic Bonding, or Sharing Electrons, Covalent Bonding.
What type of a bond is a result of sharing valence electrons? A Covalent Bond
How does a Molecule form? When two or more atoms bond covalently
The majority of covalent bonds form between what type of elements? non-metallic elements
What are the diatomic molecules, and why do exist in this way? The diatomic molecules are: Hydrogen (H₂), Nitrogen(N₂), Oxygen(O₂), Fluorine(F₂) Chlorine(Cl₂), Bromine(Br₂) and Iodine(I₂) They are formed when two atoms of each element shares electrongs. They exist this way becuase two-atom molecules are more stable than individual atoms
What is a Single Covalent Bond? A Covalent Bond in which only one pair of electrons is shared (E.X. hydrogen molecule)
What is the shared electron pair referred to as? the bonding pair
How can we represent the arrangement of electrons in a molecule? By using a Lewis Structure (similar to electron dot diagrams). E.X. H:H
What is a Sigma Bond? A Sigma Bond is a single covalent bond. It occurs when two atoms have their valence atomic orbitals overlap end to end, concentrating the electron sin a bonding orbital between the two atoms. This is a localized region where electrons are most likely to be found.
When does a double covalent bond occur? Forms when two pairs of electrons are shared between atoms. (E.X. Oxygen)
When does a triple covalent bond form? When three pairs of electrons are shared between two atoms.(E.X. Nitrogen)

How do you name molecular compounds. There are several steps. Following the following is the best way to organize it: Step 1: Look at the Formula of the molecule Step 2: Does the compound form an acidic aqueous solution? If yes, go to step 3. If no, go to step 4. Step 3: Name as an acid. Is there an oxygen present in the compound? If yes, go to step 5. If no go to step 6. Step 4: Name the first element in the molecule. Use a prefix based on the number of atoms present.. To name the second element, indicate the number of atoms present by using a prefix, and and the rood word -ide, to the second element. You are done. Step 5: Root of oxyanion present + -ic if the anion ends in -ate, or -ous, if the anion ends in -ite, then acid. You are done Step 6. Hydro + root of second element + -ic, then acid. You are done.
