Atom | Smallest element part that can exist. No electrical charge and made up of neutrons, protons and electrons. |
Proton | Positively charged particle in the nucleus of an atom. |
Neutron | Particle with no charge in the nucleus of an atom. |
Electron | Negatively charged particle which orbits the nucleus of an atom, also known as energy levels (shells). |
Energy Level (Shell) | The area around a nucleus that an electron orbits. |
Atomic Number | Number of protons in an atom. |
Mass Number | Number of protons plus the number of neutrons in an atom. |
Isotopes | Atoms with the same number of protons but a different amount of neutrons. |
Relative Atomic Mass | The average mass of atoms on an element, depending on mass and amount each isotope contains. |
Ion | An electrically charged particle, different number of protons to electrons. |
Element | A substance which contains only one type of atom, cannot be further simplified by chemical methods. |
Compound | Substance made by different types of elements chemically bonded together. |
Noble Gases | Elements in Group 0 of the periodic table. |
Alkali metals | Elements in Group 1 of the periodic table. |
Halogens | Elements in Group 7 of the periodic table. |
Diatomic molecule | A molecule containing two atoms. |
Halides | Compounds made from group 7 elements. |
Catalyst | Substance that speeds up a chemical reaction but is not used up. |
Mixture | More than one substance that are not chemically bonded together. |
Filtrate | Liquid that comes through the filter paper during filtration. |
Residue | Solid left on the filter paper during filtration. |
Saturated | A solution where no more of a substance can be dissolved, at current temperature. |
Miscible | Liquids that mix together. |
Immiscible | Liquids that no not mix together (Separate into layers instead). |
Separating funnel | Glass container with a tap used to separate immiscible liquids. |
