Bedrich Smetana (1824 - 1884) First great Czech/Slavic composer. The Bartered Bride was his best opera. Slavic folk music.
Antonin Dvorak Czech composer and friend of Brahms. Played keyboard and viola. Incorporated Slavic folk music. Toured as conductor and solo violist around Europe. Came to New York in 1892 to become director of National Conservatory of Music. Composed a lot while in America.
Edvard Grieg (1843 - 1907) Norway's greatest composer. Strongly influenced by Schumann.Worked best in shorter forms such as lyrical piano pieces. Piano concerto in a minor is a popular favorite. 1875 composed incidental music to Ibsen's play "Peer Gynt"
Edward Elgar (1857 - 1934_ First major English composer since death of Henry Purcell. Little interest in English folk music but depicted English landscapes and character. Works include 2 symphonies 5 oratorios (Dream of Gerontis considered his best) Variations on an original theme (Te Enigma Variations).
Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872 - 1958) - English composer influenced by folk music who often used whole tone scale and modality. Great interest in Renaissance music.Many Choral pieces, 9 symphonies and 4 operas. Famous for an idyllic character but would also be tempestuous at times. Important works include Flos Compi, Fantasia on Greensleeves, Fantasia on a theme by Thomas Tillis.
