Bullying | Some are bullies. Many are victims. Most are bully/victims. There are many examples of cruelty in DNA, from the horrific violence Adam suffers, through Brian's psychological torture and Phil's silent treatment of Leah. The herd mentality normalises their behaviour, but it is not without consequences - consider Brian, John Tate and even Phil by the end of the play |
Responsibility | The group is quick to distance their personal involvement in Adam's 'death', going so far as to suggest that it was, in a way, Adam's fault. In the aftermath, their principal concern is to avoid any blame for the incident. So much that they are willing to see an innocent go to prison. They do, however, accept responsibility for the closer community spirit they have accidentally created. |
Animal Instinct | When Leah ponders the differences between chimpanzees and bonobos, she ascribes their conduct to a small difference in their DNA - something beyond their control. Yet, quoting the 'woman', she believes that humans might behave better if they'd realised they are closer to bonobos. What does this say about the human mind? |
The individual v The collective | Adam dies because he wanted to be accepted by the group. John and later, Phil and Cathy gain power by forcing their individual will upon the group. Some, like Brian, will never lead. Leah is the only one to escape the group mentality. |
Original Sin | Leah wonders if we are always doomed to repeat the mistakes of those who came before us. The name 'Adam' recalls the biblical Adam who was cast out of paradise for wanting something he was forbidden to taste. |
Evolution | Leah wonders if we are always doomed to repeat the mistakes of those who came before us. Can we evolve beyond our primal nature. Can we grow to a tiny shift in our own DNA, where we are no longer a violent species? |
Friendship | Successful friendships are based on equality. All bar one of the relationships within DNA break down or change dynamic. Mark and Jan may be the only true friends within the play. |
