| Romance + Comedy = Romantic Comedy (RomCom) | Romantic-Comedy is a genre that attempts to catch the viewer’s heart with the combination of love and humor. This sub-genre is light-hearted and usually places the two protagonists in humorous situation. Romantic-Comedy film revolves around a romantic ideal, such as true love. In the end the ideal triumphs over the situation or obstacle. Example: Knocked Up - Rising journalist Alison Scott hits a serious bump in the road after a one-night stand with irresponsible slacker Ben Stone results in pregnancy. Rather than raise the baby on her own, she decides to give Ben a chance, he is unsure if he is ready to be a parent, and both wonder if they would be compatible lifetime partners. |
| Comedy + Horror = Horror-Comedy | Comedy-Horror combines comedy with traditional horror movie themes and characters. Because of the subject matter, Comedy-Horror films can cross over into the Black Comedy sub-genre. Comedy-Horror films aim to scare the audience, but also provide comical outlets that let the audience laugh at their fear. Example: Shaun of the dead - Shaun is a 30-something loser with a dull, easy existence. The only unpredictable element in his life is his girlfriend, Liz, who wishes desperately for Shaun to grow up and be a man. When the town is inexplicably overrun with zombies, Shaun must rise to the occasion and protect both Liz and his mother. |
| Action + Thriller = Action-Thriller | An Action Thriller uses physical action to create suspense within the film. Like a traditional Action film, this sub-genre will often have continuous motion and action including physical stunts, chases, fights, battles, and races. Often, these scenes will contribute to the overall sense of danger that the protagonist is facing. Example: The Bourne Identity - The story of a man, salvaged, near death. When he recuperates, the man suffers from total amnesia, without identity or background... except for a range of extraordinary talents in fighting, linguistic skills and self-defense that speak of a dangerous past. He sets out on a desperate search-to discover who he really is. |
| Melodrama sub-genre | Melodrama film is a sub-genre that appeals to the heightened emotions of the audience. The plot and characters often are more unrealistic than those found in the traditional drama film. Melodramas usually cater towards a female audience and tell a story that centers on a great crisis and a heroic protagonist. Example: Sophies Choice |
