Death Rate | The number of deaths per 1,000 people per year |
Mortality | the death of people. It is measured by a number of indices including death rate, infant mortality, case mortality and attack rate. |
Health | A state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of diseases and infirmity (World Health Organisation, 1946). |
Morbidity | Another word for illness and includes disease, disability and conditions of poor health. It's measured by prevalence and incidence rates as well as DALYs. Data can come from census information, hospital records or benefits claims etc. |
Infant mortality | The number of deaths of children under the age of 1 expressed per 1,000 live births per year. It is a useful barometer of social and environmental conditions and is sensitive to changes in either. |
DALY | Disability Adjusted Life Years- The World Health Organisation measures morbidity in DALYs which is the amount of health that is lost due to disease or condition. |
Prevalence Rate | The number of people in a given population who are suffering from a particular condition at any one time, e.g. the number of people living with cancer. |
Incidence Rate | This measures the number of new cases of a disease, e.g. the number of people diagnosed with cancer in a given population over a given time period. |
Infectious Diseases | A disease that you can catch from someone carrying it. |
Non-communicable diseases | Diseases that cannot be caught from someone else. |
