Air Spaces Empty spaces in the leaf that allow movement of gasses for photosynthesis.
Guard Cells Specialised cells which prevent the loss of water by controlling when the stomata open and close.
Chloroplasts Organelle containing chlorophyll the green pigment used for absorbing light energy.
Epidermis Protective layer of transparent cells that contain few or no chloroplasts at all.
Xylem Tubes that transport water drawn in from the roots by capillary action to the leaves and the rest of the plant.
Palisade Cells Long thin cells that contain many chloroplasts for photosynthesis.
Cuticle Waxy outer covering that prevents water loss from the leaf.
Xylem Tubes that transport sugars produced on the leaves during photosynthesis to the rest of the plant.
Spongy Parencyma Cells Irregularly shaped cells that act as a temporary store for starch and sugars.
