| What is aerobic respiration? | Aerobic respiration is the form of respiration which uses oxygen. |
| What is the equation? | glucose + oxygen → carbon dioxide + water (+ energy) |
| Where do most of the reactions happen in animal and plant cells? | Mitochondria, tiny objects inside the cytoplasm of the cell. The reactions are controlled by enzymes. |
| How is the energy used by the organism? | It may be used to build up larger molecules from smaller ones. For example: - Plants make amino acids from sugars, nitrates and other nutrients - These amino acids are then built up into larger molecules - proteins |
| How is the energy used by animals? | To enable the muscles to contract so that the animals can move. |
| Why does the heart rate increase during exercise? | To supply more oxygen and glucose to the respiring cells |
| Why does anaerobic respiration occur during hard exercise? | There may be insufficient oxygen supplied to the muscle cells |
| What substance is glucose stored as in the muscles? | Glycogen |
| What is anaerobic respiration? | The incomplete breakdown of glucose. |
| What is the equation? | glucose → lactic acid (+ little energy) |
