What type of theorist was Bellah? Neo-Functionalist
Which theorist studied the Trobriand Islanders and discovered that religion was used in times of life crises (hatching, matching, dispatching) and also when events or activities were uncertain or uncontrollable. Malinowski (1954)
Where did Bellah do his research and what concept did he create in relation to his findings. Researched America (Americanism) and created the concept of civil religion.
What is civil religion? Something that provides the functions of a authentic religion (rituals, symbols) but isn't an authentic religion e.g. Americanism.
How can the contemporary example of the response to Stephen Sutton's death be used in relation to Malinowski's argument. Many people attended his funeral, people queued for a long time to walk past his coffin. This brought people together in dealing with their grief, promoting social solidarity.
