Questão Responda
What are the 4 ways of knowing about God? The Wesleyan Quadrilateral: Scripture Reason Tradition Experience
What is the nature of the Bible? The Bible is divinely inspired (theopneustos). The Holy Spirit inspired the authors (inspiration) and helps us to understand the text (illumination).
What is the Chalcedonian Principle? The nature of Jesus and the nature of the Bible cannot be mixed, separated or confused. They are both completely divine and completely human.
What is the difference between strict inerrancy and limited inerrancy? Strict inerrancy: Everything in the bible is true, historically, chronologically, morally, and scientifically. Limited inerrancy: The Bible is inerrant in the field of religion and morality, but not science.
What are 3 ways that we interpret the bible? Allegorical - interpret the meaning as a story to illustrate a point Literal - interpret the meaning in a cultural context. Literalistic - interpret the exact meaning of the words. Ex: God's right hand Allegorical: God's right hand is a metaphor for Jesus. Literal: God is powerful and protects his people. Literalistic: God has a right hand.
Single Source Theory Vs. Dual Source Theory Single source theory says that the bible is the only source of truth. At the Council of Trent, the Roman Catholics confirmed the dual source theory, saying that Bible and Tradition are both sources of truth. If it cannot be explained by the bible, it can be explained by tradition.
How did liturgical tradition help to correct early heretical beliefs? Tradition was used to disprove: The Aryan Controversy - Debate on the equality of God and Jesus Gnosticism
What was the Aryan Controversy? The Aryan Controversy - Debate on the equality of God and Jesus Athanasius - God and Jesus are "homoousious" - same in nature. Arius - God and Jesus are "homoiousious" - similar in nature. Athanasius criticized Aryans for worshiping Jesus while protesting that he is not God. That would be worshiping an idol.
What is Gnosticism? Gnosticism was a belief that the God of the OT was evil and so all matter he created was evil too. Jesus is the Savior who will bring us into the spiritual world (we are spirits trapped in mortal bodies). Gnostics hated all material things. Tradition was used to disprove Gnosticism: Communion is a tradition. "This is my body, broken for you". Therefore Spirit can inhabit material things. Therefore materials things can't be bad.
How then, should we learn about God? Scripture, Reason, Tradition, and Experience should all be used together, in moderation. Too much of any one can lead to extremes.
Grudem #3 - Mormons, Jehovah's Witnesses, and members of other cults have claimed present day revelations from God that they count equal to the Bible in authority. What reasons can you give to indicate the falsity of those claims? In practice, do these people treat the Bible as an authority to these other "revelations?" I have no clue how to answer this...
