There is a sense of hope and potential. However, it will be achieved away from the school. Peter's Mother > Peter's mother works hard to create a place to belong " Wanting only; 'What was best' ". Her efforts are based on the perceived values and attitudes of her new environment. She wants to keep up with other Australian families by sending her son to a 'good' school. |

"Who..Why." He questions situations and events that he has no control over. Skrzynecki feels cut off ftom the past and this creates a barrier to belonging. " Mountains...river/...moonlit plain/...grasses." Behind the ancestors of Skrzynecki's fancy are epic natural features. These figuratively represent legacies passed down through generations. Peter is uncertain and uneasy about his future and there is no sense that he will achieve a sense of belonging. "Where.../Do their footprints lead?" The poet is unable to understand any communications from his ancestors. |

"Who would be coming next?" this is an enxious time filled with disappointment and frustration at the uncertainty and sense of powerlessness. |
